INTERNET FACTOIDS

Here are a few internet factoids that may help you..................

Before you start watch this video............

What is the WWW (World Wide Web) or Internet ? It's a whole load of computers (actually just 'servers' - which are basically the same as your home computer but without a screen or keyboard and with a huge amount of memory) linked up using fibre optic telephone cables, land based and satellite radio links. The system was originally invented by the US military. During the cold war they wanted to ensure that if there was any sort of invasion or nuclear attack, all the various arms of the military machine could still communicate with one another even if the old style telephone cables were severed. Because the servers are linked using many different ways it also meant that if a single (or group) of telephone exchanges were damaged, the system would continue to function. It's a bit like a spider's web that has lots of interconnecting threads. Break one, break a load, it still performs as a spider's web should, catching prey and supporting the spider.

In 1982 the Internet was created, but it really came in to it's own in 1990 when a guy called Tim Berners-Lee, a British Physicist and computer boffin, had the idea of using the web (and utilising HTML) to share documents with other scientists around the world. He found a way of bundling data into 'packets' that were then sent along the web and would eventually find their way to the recipient. An interesting note here is that I sent (and received) my first email in 1984 using a small dedicated email machine (that's all it did) that looked and worked like a small word processor. It was coupled up to the web using a standard telephone line and a dial up connection to connect to the server.

There are almost 2 billion Internet users worldwide.
And that 2 billion mark will be exceeded during 2010. Compared with 220 million US Internet users which means if you meet someone online there should be an 11% chance that they are from the US. No one knows why the actual chance of someone you meet online being from the US is actually 88%

The website name or address (eg.... www.yourname.com) or URL (Universal Resource Language) has only a very small part to play in getting good rankings. It's like a sort of personal telephone number if you like, but this one is online 24/7 and doesn't need to be answered to get a reply.
